This full-time position is funded through a U.S. EPA contract, and involves leading method development, overseeing and conducting sample preparation routines, overseeing and conducting analytical measurements of organic compounds in water samples and other contaminants of emerging concern including contaminants such as perfluorinated chemicals, and participating in operating a laboratory equipped with GC\/MS\/MS, LC\/MS\/MS and other instruments.<\/p>\n<p>The successful candidate will be a key member of a team that will provide technical support to scientists who conduct research on evaluating groundwater flow and factors influencing the fate and transport of anthropogenic and naturally occurring contaminants in the subsurface. Additionally, researchers provide technical support to federal and state environmental regulators on issues regarding subsurface contamination. Organic compounds of interest include a range of volatile and semi-volatile chemicals that are common groundwater chemicals of concern at hazardous waste sites and other research sites.&nbsp; Major classes of compounds to be analyzed include volatiles, semi-volatiles, estrogens, antibiotics, surfactants, perfluorinated chemicals, alcohols, dissolved gases, organic and volatile acids.&nbsp; The various analyses may include the use of liquid chromatography\/mass spectrometry, gas chromatography\/mass spectrometry, vapor analysis, gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, and infrared spectrometry among other techniques.&nbsp; Sample introduction techniques include headspace analyzers, purge-and trap, automated liquid sample injectors, large volume injectors, and thermal desorption.&nbsp; Existing SOPs will be used for the analysis of the samples. In case SOPs for the contaminants of concern don\u2019t exist, method development that will include sample preparation (i.e. sample preservation and handling, extraction, and fractionation) as well as extensive cleanup or purification might be required for successful analysis.&nbsp; The position requires a high degree of competence with quality control and the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for analysis of samples at parts per billion and part per trillion levels.&nbsp;
